What missed calls cost your shop.

Put in your own numbers. You'll see roughly what the calls nobody picks up are worth in repair orders, with the math shown.

Your numbers

Calls that rang out or went to voicemail. Your phone's call log shows them. It starts at 5 as an example.

Your best guess, from 0 to 10. It starts at 4 as an example.

It starts at $650, the middle shop in Tekmetric's Shop Index of more than 10,000 shops (through June 2026).

It starts at 2 as an example.

About $3,890 a month

That's $46,640 a year in first jobs alone.

And if just one of those callers a month would have become a regular, a year of visits from those 12 regulars comes to $15,600.

Nothing you type leaves this page. It isn't saved or sent anywhere.

How this is worked out

  1. 5 missed calls a week × 4.3 weeks = 22 missed calls a month.
  2. About 69% of callers who reach voicemail hang up without leaving a message. So about 15 callers a month you never hear from.
  3. If 4 in 10 of them would have booked, that's about 6 jobs a month.
  4. Those jobs × $650 = about $3,890 a month, or $46,640 a year.
  5. One regular a month for a year is 12 regulars × $650 × 2 visits = $15,600.

Dollar amounts are rounded to the nearest $10.

Why it's only an estimate

  • The 69% comes from Moneypenny's Small Business Call Report, a 2016 study of small businesses in the UK. It isn't about auto shops, and it's the best figure I found.
  • It counts only callers who left no message. Someone who left a voicemail but heard back the next day may have gone elsewhere too, so the real number can be higher.
  • Some callers try again later and get through, so the real number can also be lower.
  • For scale: Marchex, which tracks calls for large auto service chains, reports that up to 21% of their customers' calls go unanswered, dropped or mishandled.
  • The starting repair order is the median from the Tekmetric Shop Index ($649.88, more than 10,000 North American shops, through June 2026). Yours is the better number.

What helps

Most missed calls come in when everyone's under a car. Two things catch them: someone on the phone during the busy hours, or a text back to every missed call right away, so the caller hears from you before they try the next shop.
