The DFW auto repair review gap.

I counted 391 independent auto repair shops across Dallas–Fort Worth. More than half hadn't answered a single one of their recent Google reviews.

What I found

  • 222 of 391 shops (57%) had no owner reply on any of their newest Google reviews. I looked at up to 5 reviews per shop.
  • 150 of 391 (38%) had no website on their Google profile.
  • 123 shops, about a third of those with reviews, had a recent review of 3 stars or less sitting unanswered.
  • These are the shops Google Maps shows first, so if anything they're the more visible ones.

Why it matters

Customers read the replies, not just the stars. In BrightLocal's 2026 survey of 1,002 US adults, 89% said they expect owners to respond to reviews, and 42% said they're unlikely to use a business that never replies. Most expect an answer within a week.

This isn't a knock on shop owners. They're under a car all day, and nobody's job is the Google profile. That's why it slips.

Ten minutes a week fixes most of it

Once a week, open your Google Business Profile and answer every new review. Keep it short and specific. A copied template reads as one, and half of customers say a templated reply puts them off.

  • Five stars: "Thanks, Maria. Glad the brakes feel right again. See you at the next oil change."
  • Three stars, slow: "Thanks for the honest review, Dave. You waited longer than we quoted, and that's on us. Next time ask for me and I'll give you a real time up front."
  • One star, price: "I'm sorry the bill surprised you. I'd like to walk through it with you. Call me at the shop and ask for Sam."

For a bad review: thank them, own what's fair, move the conversation to the phone, and don't argue in public.

How I counted

  • Shops: what Google Maps returned for searches at five points across DFW on October 14, 2026. That's 396 of the 2,942 general auto repair outlets on the Texas Comptroller's sales-tax permit list for Dallas, Tarrant, Collin and Denton counties. I dropped 5 that turned out to be chains, leaving 391.
  • Left out: chains, body shops, tire, glass, towing and diesel.
  • For 15 shops Google returned no recent reviews to check. They count as shops, not as no-reply, so the real share is likely a little higher.
  • "A reply" means an owner response on Google. A shop might answer somewhere else, so this counts Google only.
  • One snapshot. No shop is named here, and none will be.

What's next

I'll count again every quarter (next: January 2027) to see whether the number moves.

If you run a DFW shop and want your own numbers (how many reviews are waiting and how long since your last reply), email or text me and I'll send them. Free, and no pitch unless you ask.
