What DFW drivers complain about.
I had AI read 48,548 Google reviews of independent Dallas–Fort Worth auto repair shops. The top complaint in the bad ones wasn't price. It was cars that weren't fixed.
The main reason in a bad review
This covers the 4,107 reviews of 1 to 3 stars. "Main reason" is what the review is mostly about. "Raised at all" counts any mention, so a review can land in several rows.
| Complaint | Main reason | Raised at all |
|---|---|---|
| Repair failed or the problem came back | 25% | 39% |
| Price | 14% | 47% |
| Staff attitude | 11% | 31% |
| Honesty | 9% | 33% |
| Car damaged or items missing | 7% | 14% |
| Unneeded work or upselling | 5% | 12% |
| Wait time | 5% | 19% |
| Phone not answered, no callback | 2% | 9% |
| Talked down to | 2% | 6% |
Price comes up in nearly half of bad reviews, but it's the main reason in only about 1 of 7. It also shows up in 35% of 5-star reviews. The biggest single reason is simpler: the car wasn't fixed.
What else I found
- 43% of people who left a bad review said they won't come back.
- 1-star reviews get the fewest replies. Owners answered 42% of them, against 50% of 5-star reviews.
- 68% of shops had no owner reply on any of their newest 5 reviews (1,509 of 2,226). My first count found 57%, but that covered only the 391 shops Google shows first, so this wider count isn't a trend.
- Shops that reply have fewer bad reviews. For shops that answer at least 80% of reviews, the typical share of bad ones is 5.0%. For shops that never answer, it's 8.2%. That's a link, not proof that replying is the cause.
- What 5-star reviews praise: friendly staff (53%), skill (39%), price (35%) and speed (31%).
What I'd change on Monday
- Call before they post. When a car comes back, the owner calls that customer the same day.
- Walk the car at drop-off. Take photos with the customer there, so a damage claim has a record to check.
- Answer the 1-stars first. They're the reviews shops skip most. Thank them, own what's fair, and move it to the phone.
- Agree on the price before the work starts, on the phone or in writing. It's rarely the main reason, but it comes up in nearly half of bad reviews.
How I counted
- Shops: 2,395 DFW shops from Google Maps auto repair searches. Left out by name or location count: chains, shops with 3 or more locations, body and paint, tire, towing, car wash and diesel. A name filter isn't perfect, so a few will have slipped through.
- Reviews: up to the newest 100 per shop, pulled November 1, 2026. I kept those from the last 24 months with real text: 48,548 from 1,964 shops.
- Each review got one main topic from a fixed list. In a spot check of 24, about 19 were right, so treat every share as approximate. Bad reviews and 5-star reviews were tagged separately, so comparisons between the two are rough.
- Google reviews aren't every customer. Very unhappy people and people a shop asked for a review are both overrepresented. Busy shops count only their newest 100.
- "A reply" means an owner response on Google. A shop might answer somewhere else.
- One snapshot. No shop or reviewer is named here, and none will be.
What's next
If you run a DFW shop and want your own numbers (how many reviews are waiting and how long since your last reply), email or text me and I'll send them. Free, and no pitch unless you ask.
